Audition Information
Requirements.
SHC 2025 requires that students submit an audition tape at least one month before the camp to ensure your child is allocated to ensembles and parts that suit their current playing ability. You will be required to submit a short video of your child playing one piece (<3 minutes) and scale(s) (<1 minute).

The result of your child's audition will determine which ensemble they are allocated to, however ALL STUDENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED TO SHC 2025. Your child will not be notified about the outcome of their audition, as this is purely used to determine which ensembles and parts are most appropriate given their current playing ability! We have ensemble groups that range from absolute beginners to semi-professional, so no matter what, your child will have a group where they belong at SHC!
Recording Requirements
Repertoire
The chosen piece can either be a short piece or an excerpt of a longer piece that goes for no more than three minutes. This includes the time it takes for students to introduce themselves, the date, and the piece name (see below). This piece should showcase your child's range and technical skill. We encourage students to choose repertoire from their current AMEB examination level or a piece they are currently working on that they find challenging, but are able to perform to a high standard. Only the first three minutes of the chosen piece will be assessed, so please refrain from recording longer excerpts. Backtracks or accompaniment are encouraged but not required.
Scale(s)
Preliminary - Grade 1 levels:
The chosen scale should demonstrate your child's range and technical skill. Students are encouraged to play two scales if possible, however, only one scale (including 5 note scales) are necessary for audition purposes. Please chose a scale that best suits your childs playing ability (i.e., don't just choose an easy scale that you can do perfectly if you can perform a harder scale just as well!). Choose your own articulation, all tongued, all slurred or 2 slurred-2 tongued. Students are allowed no more than one minute to perform their scale(s)
including the time it takes to introduce the scale name(s).

Grade 2 and above levels:
The chosen scales should demonstrate your child's range and technical skill. Students must play two scales, demonstrating varied articulation (e.g., one tongued, one slurred). More advanced students are encouraged to play two scales that cover at least a two octave range, to ensure that they are placed in an ensemble appropriate for their level (i.e., don't just choose an easy scale that you can do perfectly if you can perform a harder scale just as well!). Students are allowed no more than one minute to perform their scale(s) including the time it takes to introduce the scale name(s).
Logistics
Students are encouraged to wear performance blacks for the recording (avoid large sleeve in the bell that absorb the sound).

Recordings may be trimmed from the start and end but may not be edited during the performance and must be recorded in one take (i.e., you may not stitch together separate recordings of the song and scale(s) as these must be recorded back to back, in one take).

Students must perform in the following order:

-
Verbally introduce:
-
Full name
-
AMEB level (or equivalent)
-
Date of recording
-
The name and composer of their chosen piece
2. Perform their chosen piece (<3 minutes)
